I’m not sure what to think of this story yet – it starts as a meditation on aging and loss, and suddenly speeds up, taking a sharp left turn to become something more wild and unpredictable. Jeff Lemire is at the top of his game, with Dave Stewart as the colorist, Todd Klein as the letterer, and Dean Ormston as the illustrator. Together, they explore the history of comics and art, referencing The House of Mystery, The Dreaming, Sweet Tooth, and surrealism. Lucy Weber (aka the new Black Hammer) returns to the Farm, where the truth about what happened to Spiral City’s heroes is revealed. Memory erasing and dream sequences are used as plot devices, and Lucy ascends to her rightful place as successor. I’m still trying to figure out what I think of this story and I’m hoping to understand it better with the next issues.
