SINOPSIS
Alice nunca ha salido al mundo. Su cena es a las nueve en punto, su sueño dura exactamente ocho horas, jamás tiene una sola arruga en la ropa, parpadea 86 400 veces al día, respira 30 000 veces al día, solo habla cuando le preguntan, jamás ha levantado la voz y, lo más importante, jamás se ha preguntado qué pasaría si todo cambiara.

“Ciudades de Humo” introduces the reader to a cast of characters, with a particular emphasis on the main protagonists while the secondary characters remain somewhat in the background. However, being this the first book, it’s likely that these secondary characters will gain more prominence in subsequent installments. The narrative focuses on the dynamics between Alice and Rhett, as well as Alice’s personal growth and training. Although there are moments where the action might seem limited, the novel makes up for it with sharp dialogues, engaging conversations, and masterfully integrated flashbacks.
The backdrop of the story is a post-apocalyptic world that emerged after the “Great War.” In this world, androids, envisioned as an evolution of humans, coexist with human beings, some of whom view these synthetic beings with suspicion and crave power. Alice, an android, is forced to leave her home alongside her friend 42 due to a rebellion against her kind. Following her father’s last instructions, she arrives at Central City, a haven for human rebels opposed to androids. In this place, it’s essential for Alice to conceal her true nature if she hopes to stay alive.
Once in Central City, Alice dives into an unfamiliar environment filled with challenges. She finds herself needing to adapt swiftly, undergoing rigorous training sessions. In the midst of this, she uncovers a natural talent in a specific area, and it’s Rhett, a local resident, who steps in to guide her. While Rhett initially shows reluctance towards Alice, over time, a unique bond develops between them, fueled by his insinuations and her genuine curiosity. Yet, given the context in which they find themselves, their relationship proves to be a dangerously forbidden connection.

“Ciudades de Humo” introduce al lector a un elenco de personajes, destacando especialmente a los protagonistas mientras que los secundarios quedan un tanto en la sombra. No obstante, siendo este el primer libro, es probable que los personajes secundarios cobren mayor relevancia en las siguientes entregas. La narrativa se centra en la dinámica entre Alice y Rhett, y en el desarrollo personal y entrenamiento de Alice. Aunque en ciertos momentos la acción podría parecer escasa, la novela compensa con diálogos ágiles, entretenidos y unos flashbacks magistralmente integrados.
El escenario de la historia es un mundo post-apocalíptico surgido tras la “Gran Guerra”. En él, coexisten androides, concebidos como una evolución de los humanos, y seres humanos, algunos de los cuales ven con recelo a estos seres sintéticos y ansían poder. Siguiendo las últimas instrucciones de su padre, llega a Ciudad Central, refugio de humanos rebeldes opuestos a los androides. En este lugar, es crucial para Alice ocultar su verdadera naturaleza si quiere mantenerse con vida.
Una vez en Ciudad Central, Alice se sumerge en un entorno desconocido repleto de retos. Se ve en la necesidad de adaptarse a marchas forzadas, enfrentando rigurosos entrenamientos. En medio de este proceso, descubre un talento natural en un área particular y es Rhett, un habitante local, quien se ofrece a guiarla. A pesar de que inicialmente Rhett muestra reticencia hacia Alice, con el tiempo, una química especial surge entre ellos, alimentada por las sugerencias de él y la genuina curiosidad de ella. Sin embargo, en el contexto en que se encuentran, su relación resulta ser un vínculo peligrosamente tabú.
