“20 Days in Mariupol” is a documentary that chronicles the early days of the Russo-Ukrainian war from the perspective of Ukrainian AP international journalist, Mstyslav Chernov, field producer Vasilisa Stepanenko, and photographer Evgeniy Maloletka. The documentary follows their journey as the last journalists standing in Mariupol, a port city in the crosshairs of Russian forces. Some locals fled before the war reached the city, but many stayed, either due to an inability to leave or disbelief in the looming horror. The war broke out just an hour after Chernov and his team arrived in the city, giving rise to a real-time account of a community losing their homes, families, and livelihoods within a matter of days.
Shot entirely with Chernov’s camera, the footage provides a raw and terrifyingly immediate view of the brutal conflict. As the title suggests, the film chronicles the 20 days it took for Russian soldiers to turn Mariupol into a war zone. The city, without support from Ukrainian forces and besieged from all sides, left its remaining inhabitants, including Chernov and his team, trapped. The sudden air raids and shellings of city centers, universities, hospitals, and neighborhoods marked the beginning of the war. Chernov’s interactions with the locals revealed a community engulfed in fear and despair. Despite the chaos and dangers, Chernov continued documenting the situation, hoping that his footage might change the course of the war. But it must be painful to watch.” His narration underscores the urgency of ensuring that the reality of war is seen and understood, no matter how hard it is to witness such atrocities.
