Welcome back to the darkness! In Sarah Polley’s newest feature, we witness a group of women debating their three options in a barn loft on the edge of their religious commune: do nothing, stay and fight, or leave. What inspired this story is a true and horrific event: between 2005 and 2009, over 150 women in a deeply religious Mennonite community in Bolivia were drugged and violently raped. Rooney Mara, Claire Foy, and Jessie Buckley portray the tormented women, while Oscar winner Frances McDormand has a small part as Scarface Janz. Ben Whishaw plays August, the gentle schoolteacher with an eye towards Ona. We watch as these women debate revenge, forgiveness, and self-protection, and with the help of Luc Montpellier’s black and white cinematography and Hildur Guonadottier’s strings score, we are able to feel the courage of these real women from Bolivia. Polley offers a thought-provoking and gut-punching approach to the way these women must take stock of their situation, and the result is inspiring.
