The horror genre often thrives on referencing and recycling tropes, but Scott Walker’s “The Tank” leans towards cheap imitation. Drawing inspiration from classics such as Alien, Aliens, The Descent, and even an episode of The X-Files, the film disappoints by failing to meet expectations. The plot focuses on Ben and Jules, pet shop owners who discover they have inherited a coastal property from Ben’s deceased mother. Upon arrival with their daughter, Reia, they discover a monster dwelling in the property’s unsealed water tank.
The film generates tension more through suspense and stalking than through a high body count, keeping the monster shrouded in mystery. Director Walker takes inspiration from Jaws in the slow reveal of the creature, a decision dictated more by the limitations of the script than by an artistic choice. The sighting of the monster by the characters is delayed to prevent the plot from derailing due to their questionable decisions.
However, Walker’s slow-burn approach harms the “creature” component of the film, which is robust in execution and performance. As the story unfolds, the script weakens, offering little depth to the characters of Ben and Jules beyond clichés. There is no marital conflict despite the monster sightings, and their daughter, Reia, is largely forgotten. The monster, expertly designed by Weta Workshop, is the only standout of the film, leaving the audience wondering if Walker has fallen short or if Weta has exceeded expectations.

El género de terror suele prosperar a través de la referencia y la reciclaje de tropos, pero “The Tank” de Scott Walker se inclina hacia una imitación barata. Inspirándose en clásicos como Alien, Aliens, The Descent, e incluso un episodio de The X-Files, la película decepciona al no alcanzar las expectativas. La trama se centra en Ben y Jules, propietarios de una tienda de mascotas, quienes descubren que han heredado una propiedad costera de la madre fallecida de Ben. Al llegar con su hija, Reia, descubren un monstruo que habita en el tanque de agua sin sellar de la propiedad.
La película genera tensión más a través del suspenso y el acecho que a través de un alto número de muertes, manteniendo al monstruo envuelto en misterio. El director Walker se inspira en Jaws en la revelación lenta de la criatura, una decisión dictada más por las limitaciones del guión que por una elección artística. Se retrasa el avistamiento del monstruo por los personajes para evitar que la trama se descarrile debido a decisiones cuestionables de estos.
Sin embargo, el enfoque lento de Walker perjudica al componente “criatura” de la película, que es robusto en ejecución y rendimiento. A medida que la historia se desarrolla, el guión se debilita, ofreciendo poca profundidad a los personajes de Ben y Jules aparte de los clichés.
