Despite facing production issues, Raya and the Last Dragon has finally been released on Disney+. The film features an impressive voice cast including Kelly Marie Tran, Awkwafina, Sandra Oh, and Gemma Chan and offers a rare representation of Asian culture in Disney animation. The movie follows Raya, voiced by Tran, as she sets out to find the last dragon and use its power to rid her land of Kumandra of the evil that has taken over it. The animation is visually stunning, as expected from a Disney film, with crisp movements, beautiful landscapes, and a vibrant color palette, accompanied by a rich score. The voice actors are well-suited to their characters, with Tran effectively capturing Raya’s fierceness and vulnerability, and Awkwafina balancing comedic and dramatic elements as the last dragon, Sisu. The characters are well-developed and enjoyable to watch, even the scheming antagonists. The movie touches on themes of hope, trust, and forgiveness, but these messages are not particularly groundbreaking. While the film may be slightly too long, it is captivating throughout. Raya and the Last Dragon is a visual masterpiece and offers a new strong princess for Disney fans.
