Riz Ahmed shines in the powerful drama Sound of Metal, playing Ruben, a metal drummer whose life is thrown into chaos after he loses his hearing. Olivia Cooke is important but underutilized as Ruben’s bandmate and girlfriend, Lou. Ahmed captures Ruben’s emotional rollercoaster with aplomb, and is matched by Paul Raci, who plays the counselor of the deaf community Ruben is integrating with. Raci’s performance provides a jumping in point for the audience to empathize with Ruben. Debutant director Darius Marder impresses with his camerawork and sound design, creating a vivid experience of Ruben’s loss. Although there are some moments that meander and a melodramatic finale, Sound of Metal is an insightful and often devastating look into the struggles faced by the deaf community.
