SINOPSIS
Movie Short Review
English review
La bola negra is not interested in treating Lorca as a museum object. Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi take the surviving fragment as permission rather than instruction, building a large, sensual film about queer lives that history repeatedly tried to reduce to footnotes. The three timelines do not click together like a puzzle. They rhyme: a gesture, a song, a body made ashamed, a desire that refuses to disappear.
The film is enormous in appetite and sometimes enormous to a fault. Gris Jordana’s images are saturated with flesh, fabric, smoke and colour; Raül Refree’s music makes memory feel physical. Penélope Cruz arrives with the force of an old melodrama star, while Guitarricadelafuente’s presence has the rawness of somebody not entirely protected by technique. Calvo and Ambrossi are willing to be excessive, sentimental and explicit, and there are passages where the insistence weakens what the images had already said.
But the excess is also the point. A history built around silence demands a film that refuses to whisper. La bola negra is uneven, occasionally swollen and emotionally fearless; its best scenes do not ask for tasteful admiration but recognition. It turns queer memory into something shared across generations without pretending those generations suffered in the same way. That ambition, and the anger underneath the beauty, make it one of the year’s most difficult Spanish films to shake.
The three-period structure also allows Calvo and Ambrossi to make time itself part of the drama. They cut not simply between plots but between different permissions: what can be said in public, what can be touched without fear, what kinds of desire have a name. The 1930s passages carry the threat of history closing in; the later material is freer on the surface but haunted by all the gestures that earlier generations had to hide. That continuity is sometimes made too explicit, yet the film is strongest when a look or a piece of music crosses decades without explanation and suddenly makes the distance between the characters feel very small.
Its theatricality will divide audiences. Rooms are staged like memories rather than neutral spaces, colours announce emotion, and several performances deliberately push beyond naturalism. There are moments when the accumulation of beauty, pain and symbolism becomes exhausting, particularly in the final third, where almost every scene seems determined to become definitive. But restraint would also have been a dishonest aesthetic for this material. The directors are interested in people denied the luxury of being ordinary, and the film answers that denial with abundance. Even its misjudgements come from wanting to preserve too much rather than reduce these lives to tasteful tragedy.
The performances hold that abundance together. Guitarricadelafuente brings a watchful vulnerability that makes desire feel dangerous before the script says why, while Cruz plays glamour as something both protective and corrosive. Close, used sparingly, supplies a different kind of authority: less explosive, more aware of what institutions remember and what they choose to forget. The film sometimes asks its actors to carry symbols on top of characters, but when it relaxes that burden the ensemble gives the historical sweep a human scale.
