However, I was wrong in my judgement as the writer has created a captivating story out of this premise. It is the writer’s skill that makes the story truly stand out, as a good writer can make a great story out of anything. “The Patient” tells the story of Doctor Evans, a brilliant neurosurgeon, who has been posed with an impossible dilemma: if his next patient comes out alive from the operating table, his daughter will die. The characters in this novel are well developed and come to life on the page.
David Evans, the protagonist of this novel, is a real person, with flaws and virtues like any other human being. He is not a hero or a villain, just a person who is dealing with a complex situation. This is the first novel narrated by this author in first person which helps the reader to understand and sympathize with the character. Also featured in the novel are the eerie Mr. White and the resolute Kate. Gomez-Jurado’s evolution in the creation of his characters is more than notable in this last book, especially in what refers to female characters. The main plot of the novel is not the only thing that evolves in this story as morality, justice and love take on a symbolic role as the reader learns more about the neurosurgeon’s story. The novel is narrated in a captivating way with a dynamic rhythm that keeps the reader engaged throughout. Juan Gomez-Jurado also consulted with a doctor, a neurosurgeon and an anesthetist to ensure that the novel was accurately documented. Overall, “The Patient” is a captivating novel with a dynamic story and well-developed characters. JuanGómez-Jurado has created an engaging story out of a seemingly simple premise, and the novel has already been sold for a movie adaptation. This is a truly remarkable work of fiction from a talented writer.
Al principio me decepcionó leer la sinopsis de la novela de JuanGómez-Jurado, “El paciente”. Esperaba una segunda parte de “La Leyenda del Ladrón” y la premisa de este libro parecía demasiado simple.
