Gina Prince-Bythewood’s historical epic, The Woman King, takes us back to 1823 in the Kingdom of Dahomey, West Africa. The story follows a young king, Ghezo (Boyega), who is faced with the threat of being colonized by the powerful Oyo Empire. He relies on the Agojie – an all-female tribe of warriors led by the brave Nanisca (Davis) – to protect his kingdom from annihilation. Although the film may not be entirely historically accurate, it captures the spirit of the warriors and contains many truths from the era. The Woman King blends action, drama, and commentary in a captivating way, producing an epic atmosphere without losing its intimate feel. The action sequences are realistically choreographed and never stray into gory territory, and the narrative is driven by the story of a young girl, Nawi (Mbedu), who joins the Agojie against her father’s wishes. Mbedu’s performance is outstanding, and she almost outshines the terrific Viola Davis. The pounding score by Terence Blanchard helps to bring the story to life, and the film ultimately celebrates the brave warrior women of the Agojie by humanizing them and showing their strength, vulnerability, and fearlessness, without any sexualization or cliched messages of empowerment. The Woman King is an exceptional epic, with commanding performances and a powerful story.

La epopeya histórica de Gina Prince-Bythewood, The Woman King, nos retrotrae a 1823 en el Reino de Dahomey, África Occidental. La historia sigue a un joven rey, Ghezo (Boyega), que se enfrenta a la amenaza de ser colonizado por el poderoso Imperio Oyo. Confía en Agojie, una tribu de guerreras compuesta exclusivamente por mujeres liderada por la valiente Nanisca (Davis), para proteger su reino de la aniquilación. Aunque es posible que la película no sea del todo precisa desde el punto de vista histórico, captura el espíritu de los guerreros y contiene muchas verdades de la época.
