I was incredibly excited to get to experience the Slough House spooks and their failed cases again after reading Dead Lions. I have grown to love this series more and more with each book, and this one is no exception. When one of the spies, Catherine Standish, is kidnapped by a former soldier seeking vengeance, the rest of the disgraced spies must infiltrate Regent’s Park and collect classified information if they want her to be released. This mission is not as simple as it seems, as it leads to a variety of other plots and counterplots within the intelligence services, as well as the involvement of the “tigers.” Regent Park is full of ambition and intrigue, and there is a Home Secretary, Peter ‘PJ’ Judd, who is clearly based off a politician we are all familiar with. The narrative shifts often and the level of intricate plotting is extraordinary. In addition, the dialogue and writing are great, and the characters are truly incredible. The character development is outstanding, especially when it comes to the head of Slough House, the abrasive and brilliant Jackson Lamb. This book is full of suspense, twists, tension, dark humor, and comic moments, making it a highly recommended read.
