I finally got around to starting the Slough House series by Mick Herron and I’m so glad I did! Herron takes the traditional spy story and adds a unique spin to it, with nods to classic spy novels. Slough House is a place where members of the intelligence service who have messed up are dumped, and the now defunct spooks hope to one day be useful again. River Cartwright dreams of another chance, but his colleagues are resigned to their fate. When a young man is kidnapped and threatened with beheading online, the Slow Horses become involved in the case and must throw off their mantle as failures to save the day. This is a clever, realistic, well-plotted, and funny book with intriguing characters, plot twists, and settings. If you’re a fan of Le Carre and Eric Ambler, I would highly recommend this modern take on the spy novel.
