“Neither Here nor Anywhere Else,” an anthology of short stories by Patricia Esteban Erlés, transports us to those tales narrated around the fire on nights as deep and dark as the abyss of the sea. Published by Páginas de Espuma and illustrated by Alejandra Acosta, the collection explores themes such as love, death, betrayal, madness, and cruelty through characters very different from those in children’s stories, evoking the mysteries of enchanted forests, fairies, witches, giants, and dwarves. The author constantly leaps through time and space, challenging expectations and conveying the same terror and nightmarish morals in stories set in the 20th century.
The unique grouping of sixteen stories by Esteban Erlés gives voice to the hope, terror, and melancholy that settle in our skin story after story. With a unique style, the author approaches the understanding of the terror of the Brothers Grimm and the unfathomable sadness of Hans Christian Andersen, narrating stories in the first or third person that seem to be told exclusively to each reader. Happiness in these stories, if it exists, is bitter and fleeting, while sadness is constant and drags us through a continuous mourning. The story “The Monster” stands out, touching due to its connection with the princess and the unrecognizable empathy only experienced by those who live that bond, accompanied by Alejandra Acosta’s bicolor illustrations that evoke images from the 18th and 19th centuries.

“Ni aquí ni en ningún otro lugar”, una antología de cuentos de Patricia Esteban Erlés, nos transporta a esos relatos narrados alrededor del fuego en noches profundas y oscuras como el abismo marino. Publicada por la editorial Páginas de Espuma e ilustrada por Alejandra Acosta, la colección explora temas como el amor, la muerte, la traición, la locura y la crueldad a través de personajes muy distintos a los de los cuentos infantiles, evocando los misterios de bosques encantados, hadas, brujas, gigantes y enanos. La autora salta constantemente en el tiempo y el espacio, desafiando las expectativas y transmitiendo ese mismo terror y moraleja de pesadilla en relatos ambientados en el siglo XX.
La peculiar agrupación de dieciséis cuentos de Esteban Erlés da voz a la esperanza, el terror y la melancolía que se instalan en nuestra piel cuento tras cuento. Con un estilo único, la autora se acerca a la comprensión del terror de los hermanos Grimm y la tristeza insondable de Hans Christian Andersen, narrando historias en primera o tercera persona que parecen ser contadas exclusivamente a cada lector. La felicidad en estos relatos, si es que existe, es amarga y efímera, mientras que la tristeza es constante y nos arrastra a través de un duelo continuo. Destaca el cuento “El monstruo”, que conmueve por la conexión con la princesa y la empatía irreconocible solo por aquellos que viven ese vínculo, acompañado por las ilustraciones bicolor de Alejandra Acosta que evocan imágenes de los siglos XVIII y XIX.

SOBRE EL AUTOR
Patricia Esteban Erlés ha publicado tres libros de cuentos. El primero de ellos, Manderley en venta (2008), reeditado por Páginas de Espuma en 2019, obtuvo el Premio de Narración Breve de la Universidad de Zaragoza en 2007. Su segundo libro, Abierto para fantoches (2008), ganó el XXII Premio de Narrativa Santa Isabel de Aragón, Reina de Portugal. En 2010 publicó su tercer libro de cuentos, Azul ruso, y en 2012 su primer libro de microcuentos, Casa de Muñecas, ambos en Páginas de Espuma. Una veintena de sus cuentos han sido antologados en volúmenes colectivos como Pequeñas Resistencias 5: Antología del nuevo cuento español (2010), Cuento español actual (1992-2012) (2012), Madrid Negro (2016), Las otras y Las mil caras del monstruo (2018), entre otros. En 2017 ganó el Premio Dos Passos con su primera novela, Las madres negras.
