SINOPSIS

“Autumnal” a masterpiece of graphic novel created by Daniel Kraus, illustrated by Chris Shehan, and masterfully colored by Jason Wordie, immerses the reader in a haunting horror story set in an apparently idyllic town. This work tackles more than just a traditional fear plot; it also presents an emotionally charged narrative focused on the struggle of a mother, Kat Somerville, and her daughter, Sybil, against a traumatic past and a terrifying present. Upon inheriting her estranged mother’s house, the protagonists are drawn to the bucolic charm of Comfort Notch. However, this town quickly reveals a dark side, where children disappear, leaf-stuffed corpses emerge, and an enigmatic local legend weaves together to form a disturbing mystery. Despite “The Autumnal” not providing concrete answers, this ambiguity is precisely what accentuates its intriguing and chilling character.
At the core of “Autumnal,” Kraus highlights the exploration of how mystery affects the characters and their generational trauma. Kat, being entangled in this mystery, is forced to confront her complex feelings towards her deceased mother and the impact they have on her relationship with Sybil. Meanwhile, the citizens of Comfort Notch are faced with the decision of how far they are willing to go to preserve their utopian status quo. This attention to the characters’ traumas, from Kat’s tumultuous past to the wounds she has passed on to Sybil, and the trauma that permeates the town’s history, becomes a thread that drives the plot.
However, despite Kraus’s meticulous attention to these emotional aspects, the brevity of the eight issues of “Autumnal” limits the exploration of these themes. The citizens of Comfort Notch mostly remain as archetypes, and the relationship between Sybil and her mother is not as thoroughly explored as one would desire. Nevertheless, the central mystery, although predictable, provides a solid framework for the narrative. Comfort Notch, with its rich autumnal and woodland imagery, carries an air of witchcraft that, coupled with the uncertainty surrounding the mystery, adds an extra layer of complexity and terror to the story.
Shehan’s abstract and awe-inspiring art, along with Wordie’s vibrant colors, are essential in conveying the horror in “Autumnal.” The images of corpses with leaves flowing from their mouths are unsettling and spectacular, and Shehan’s art becomes increasingly eerie as the story progresses. Wordie, with his palette bathed in reds and oranges, perfectly captures the autumnal atmosphere, generating a mix of nostalgia and terror. In summary, “Autumnal,” although imperfect in its character development and exploration of themes, when it works, it does so exceedingly well, offering a quick and chilling read with some of the most stunning illustrations in graphic novels.

“Otoñal”, una obra maestra de la novela gráfica creada por Daniel Kraus, ilustrada por Chris Shehan y magistralmente coloreada por Jason Wordie, sumerge al lector en una inquietante historia de terror ambientada en un pueblo aparentemente idílico. Esta obra aborda más que solo una trama de miedo tradicional; presenta también una narrativa emocionalmente cargada centrada en la lucha de una madre, Kat Somerville, y su hija, Sybil, contra un pasado traumático y un presente aterrador. Tras heredar la casa de su alejada madre, las protagonistas se ven atraídas al encanto bucólico de Comfort Notch. Daniel Kraus es un autor y guionista estadounidense, nació en Midland, Michigan y creció en Iowa. Junto a Guillermo del Toro escribió la novela Trollhunters.
