SINOPSIS
Mike y Claire, dos músicos de Milwaukee con más entusiasmo que fortuna, encuentran una segunda oportunidad cuando forman Lightning & Thunder, una banda tributo a Neil Diamond. Song Sung Blue could easily have been a joke about people who impersonate somebody more famous than themselves. Craig Brewer makes the better choice: he takes Mike and Claire Sardina completely seriously. Their Neil Diamond tribute act is not presented as a consolation prize for failed artists but as a place where two ordinary people discover that performance can make an ordinary life feel briefly enormous. Hugh Jackman brings the expected showmanship, yet the surprise is how willing he is to let Mike be vain, exhausting and vulnerable. Kate Hudson is even better, giving Claire the warmth that keeps the movie from turning into a parade of setbacks.
The problem is that Brewer sometimes loves the story too loudly. The real lives behind the film contain so much accident, illness and disappointment that the screenplay rarely trusts one emotional event before introducing the next. That accumulation can feel engineered, especially when dialogue begins underlining feelings the actors have already communicated. Monica Castillo’s criticism of the film’s melodramatic compression is persuasive here: the movie occasionally behaves as if resilience needs to be proved by suffering in every reel. But the excess also belongs to Brewer’s generous, unfashionably sincere sensibility.
What saves it is the music and, more importantly, what the music means to these people. Jackman and Hudson have the chemistry to make a local tribute show feel like Madison Square Garden without pretending Mike and Claire are secret superstars. Their success remains modest, specific and communal. That distinction matters. The film’s most affecting idea is that a dream does not have to become globally important in order to be real. A bar full of people singing along can be enough. A marriage built around borrowed songs can still be entirely your own.
It is easy to see why some critics found the film too sweet and others embraced its lack of irony. Song Sung Blue is sentimental, occasionally clumsy and structurally overstuffed, but it is never condescending toward its characters. In a genre obsessed with geniuses and icons, Brewer makes a musical biopic about people whose greatest achievement is continuing. That modesty gives the movie more dignity than its biggest dramatic gestures.

Song Sung Blue podía haberse convertido con mucha facilidad en una broma sobre gente que imita a alguien más famoso que ella. Craig Brewer toma la decisión acertada: se toma completamente en serio a Mike y Claire Sardina. Su banda tributo a Neil Diamond no aparece como el premio de consolación de unos artistas fracasados, sino como el lugar donde dos personas corrientes descubren que actuar puede hacer que una vida corriente parezca enorme durante un rato. Hugh Jackman aporta el espectáculo esperado, aunque lo mejor es que permite que Mike sea vanidoso, agotador y vulnerable. Kate Hudson está todavía mejor y dota a Claire de la calidez que impide que la película sea únicamente una sucesión de desgracias.
El problema es que Brewer a veces quiere demasiado a su propia historia. Las vidas reales contienen tantos accidentes, enfermedades y decepciones que el guion apenas deja respirar una emoción antes de introducir la siguiente. Esa acumulación puede sentirse programada, sobre todo cuando los diálogos subrayan sentimientos que los intérpretes ya habían expresado. La película llega a comportarse como si la resiliencia necesitara demostrarse mediante una nueva calamidad en cada acto. Sin embargo, ese exceso también pertenece a la sensibilidad generosa y poco irónica de Brewer.
Lo que la salva es la música y, sobre todo, lo que la música significa para estos personajes. Jackman y Hudson poseen suficiente química para que un concierto local parezca gigantesco sin fingir que Mike y Claire son estrellas secretas esperando ser descubiertas. Su éxito continúa siendo pequeño, concreto y comunitario. Y ahí está la mejor idea de la película: un sueño no necesita volverse importante para millones de personas para ser verdadero. Un bar lleno cantando puede ser suficiente. Un matrimonio construido alrededor de canciones prestadas puede seguir siendo completamente propio.
Se entiende que algunos críticos hayan rechazado su dulzura y que otros hayan celebrado precisamente su ausencia de cinismo. Song Sung Blue es sentimental, algo torpe y demasiado cargada de acontecimientos, pero nunca mira a sus protagonistas por encima del hombro. En un género obsesionado con genios e iconos, Brewer rueda una biografía musical sobre personas cuyo mayor logro consiste en seguir adelante. Esa modestia termina dándole más dignidad que sus grandes golpes dramáticos.
