M3GAN is a thrilling and entertaining horror romp that follows the story of a lifelike AI doll created to conquer the toy market and provide kids with a humanlike companion. The movie, directed by Gerard Johnstone and written by Akela Cooper, explores themes of technology, attachment and family, and provides a welcome addition to a movie that spends more time than initially expected with its set up and development before diving into its killer doll narrative. The movie is campy and light on horror violence, but the doll, played by Violet McGraw, steals all of the scenes she is in and provides laughs, attitude, and more than a few creepy moments. The relationship between the doll and her new BFF, Cady, as well as her aunt, Gemma, provides the majority of the highlights. While the movie does not cross any bold lines in terms of overt violence or gore, it leaves room for potential in further sequels. Overall, M3GAN is a deliciously fun and entertaining joyride and a new contemporary horror icon.
