SINOPSIS
Bethany viaja a Varsovia con su novio Rob, convencida de que la escapada acabará en una propuesta de matrimonio para la que no está preparada. Una erupción volcánica altera el viaje y la lleva a reencontrarse con Nel, una amiga de la infancia que trabaja en una floristería. Entre paseos, fiestas y conversaciones suspendidas, ambas recuperan una intimidad que parecía enterrada.

Erupcja is less interested in the literal volcano than in the emotional tremors preceding it. Pete Ohs treats Warsaw as a city of temporary permissions, a place where Bethany can delay the future Rob has already imagined for them and revisit the version of herself that existed beside Nel. The film’s looseness is both its charm and its limitation: scenes drift into one another with the logic of memory rather than plot, and the small scale allows every glance to carry more weight than any conventional dramatic turn.
Charli XCX gives Bethany a watchful, slightly displaced quality that suits the film’s refusal of grand declarations. Lena Góra is even better as Nel, whose familiarity with Bethany is mixed with the instinctive caution of someone who remembers how easily intimacy can be interrupted. Their chemistry comes from pauses, half-jokes and the sense that both women are constantly testing whether the past can be entered again without becoming a trap.
Ohs shoots the city with an affectionate imperfection. Clubs, flower shops, pavements and apartments feel inhabited rather than designed for picturesque effect. The volcanic motif might sound aggressively symbolic, but the film wisely keeps it peripheral. The eruption becomes less a metaphor to decode than a disruption that gives Bethany permission to change course, and the casualness of that decision is one of the film’s most honest qualities.
The result is slight, but deliberately so. Erupcja does not build toward catharsis or offer a neat answer to the relationships it complicates. Instead, it captures the strange emotional temperature of seeing someone who once knew you deeply and discovering that recognition can still alter your present. It is a small, warm and gently melancholic film whose unfinished quality feels closer to lived experience than to narrative deficiency.

Erupcja está menos interesada en el volcán literal que en los pequeños temblores emocionales que lo preceden. Pete Ohs convierte Varsovia en una ciudad de permisos temporales, un lugar donde Bethany puede aplazar el futuro que Rob ya ha imaginado para los dos y recuperar la versión de sí misma que existía junto a Nel. La ligereza narrativa es su principal encanto y también su límite: las escenas fluyen con lógica de recuerdo más que de trama y esa escala pequeña permite que una mirada tenga más peso que cualquier gran giro.
Charli XCX construye a Bethany desde una observación ligeramente desubicada que encaja con la negativa de la película a las declaraciones enfáticas. Lena Góra resulta todavía más interesante como Nel, cuya familiaridad con Bethany está mezclada con la prudencia de quien recuerda lo fácil que es interrumpir una intimidad. Su química nace de silencios, medias bromas y la sensación de que ambas están comprobando continuamente si el pasado puede visitarse sin convertirse de nuevo en una trampa.
Ohs filma la ciudad con una imperfección afectuosa. Clubs, floristerías, calles y pisos parecen lugares habitados antes que escenarios diseñados para quedar bonitos. El motivo volcánico podría haber resultado demasiado obvio, pero queda sabiamente en segundo plano. La erupción funciona menos como símbolo que haya que descifrar que como interrupción que concede a Bethany la posibilidad de cambiar de dirección.
El resultado es una película pequeña, y lo es de manera consciente. Erupcja no busca una gran catarsis ni ofrece una respuesta limpia a las relaciones que complica. Prefiere capturar la temperatura emocional de reencontrarse con alguien que te conoció profundamente y descubrir que ese reconocimiento todavía puede modificar tu presente. Su condición inacabada se parece más a la experiencia vivida que a una carencia narrativa.
