It’s always exciting to see what an Academy Award-winning director will do next and in the case of Chloé Zhao, it’s a Marvel movie, Eternals. The 26th installment in the MCU, Eternals introduces immortal superbeings who have lived anonymously on Earth for millennia and must reteam to fight their returning nemesis, the Deviants. However, the film struggles to merge Zhao’s unique and beautiful talents with Kevin Feige’s well-oiled but rigid Marvel machine. The film’s lack of Zhao’s signature touch in writing and editing, as well as its visual feel, is noticeable. The drawn-out narrative fails to soar and the attempt to create a slower, more character-driven piece is hindered by the pedestrian pacing, heavy exposition, and uninteresting characters. Through the vast amount of character interaction and conversations, Eternals strives to deliver a deep, existential experience, but it falls short. The film also struggles to introduce so many new characters, with only a select few standing out among the talented cast. However, the film does boast some stunning landscapes and expansive shots that create a sense of awe. The score by Ramin Djawadi is also noteworthy. Despite the talents of Zhao and the diverse and talented cast, Eternals is an unbalanced, messy, uninspiring, and ultimately disappointing film. It will be interesting to see how the MCU builds upon it, but hopefully it will be done better.

Siempre es emocionante ver qué hará a continuación un director ganador de un Premio de la Academia y, en el caso de Chloé Zhao, es una película de Marvel, Eternals. La entrega número 26 de la MCU, Eternals, presenta superseres inmortales que han vivido de forma anónima en la Tierra durante milenios y deben volver a formar equipo para luchar contra su némesis que regresa, los Deviants. Sin embargo, la película lucha por fusionar los talentos únicos y hermosos de Zhao con la máquina Marvel bien engrasada pero rígida de Kevin Feige. La falta del toque característico de Zhao en la escritura y edición de la película, así como su sensación visual, es notable. La narrativa prolongada no logra elevarse y el intento de crear una pieza más lenta y más centrada en los personajes se ve obstaculizado por el ritmo peatonal, la exposición pesada y los personajes poco interesantes. A través de la gran cantidad de interacciones y conversaciones de los personajes, Eternals se esfuerza por ofrecer una experiencia existencial profunda, pero se queda corta.
