English review

Aubrey Plaza is rapidly emerging as a “must watch” performer, captivating viewers with her remarkable roles, such as her portrayal of Emily in “Emily the Criminal.” In this film, Plaza’s character, Emily, is a young woman weighed down by student debt and a criminal record that hinders her from securing stable employment. She stumbles upon “dummy shopping,” a scheme that involves buying expensive items with stolen credit cards and reselling them for profit. Despite initial hesitation, Emily chooses to partake in this illegal activity upon realizing its lucrative potential. During the film’s early stages, Plaza’s performance is both enthralling and believable as she creates a character who seeks cosmic justice after feeling as if her life has been stolen.

Emily becomes increasingly immersed in credit card fraud and decides to cut out the middleman to start her own operation. She seeks assistance from Youcef, her previous supplier of stolen credit cards. The film delves into Youcef’s character, revealing him to be a relatable individual with his own dreams and disappointments, rather than a one-dimensional crook. Writer-director John Patton Ford masterfully humanizes these characters by depicting them as individuals striving to survive, rather than simply labeling them as good or evil. The first part of “Emily the Criminal” focuses on Emily’s development of her credit card fraud empire and her growing connection with Youcef, presenting the film’s most captivating moments and a gritty, authentic world in which these characters live.

The movie, however, loses momentum when the focus shifts from Emily to Youcef and his conflicts with his criminal associates. Despite Theo Rossi’s praiseworthy portrayal of Youcef, relegating Emily to a secondary role in his story seems misguided. Nonetheless, Plaza’s progressively desperate and intense performance maintains the film’s engagement. Tension escalates as writer-director Ford orchestrates anxiety-provoking scenes, culminating in a pressure-cooker atmosphere destined to erupt. Though the film has some shortcomings, the most unforgettable element of “Emily the Criminal” is Aubrey Plaza’s exceptional performance, leaving viewers eager to see where her career leads her next.
