During the 1990s, Michael Keaton was predestined to star in a third Batman movie. Even after Tim Burton was replaced by Joel Schumacher as the director of Batman Forever, Keaton remained linked to the project for several months until he finally turned down a $15 million paycheck to appear in the film due to his dissatisfaction with the script. With just a few changes in history, such as a different screenwriter or a slightly darker story, Keaton might have stayed on for Batman Forever, which would have drastically altered the course of DC movies. Keaton could also have returned for Batman & Robin, either damaging his Batman legacy with ice puns exchanged with Arnold Schwarzenegger or maintaining the spirit of the Burton films to create another hit. This turn of events could even have led to Christopher Nolan never making his Dark Knight trilogy, changing his entire career. This twist in history hinged on whether Keaton accepted the role to play Batman for Joel Schumacher for $15 million.
In reality, more than 30 years passed before Keaton returned to play Batman again, which he does in The Flash, a film that is less about DC Comics’ speedy hero and more of a reboot of the DC Movie Universe with a variety of guest stars from the multiverse. The story begins with Barry Allen, also known as The Flash, who discovers his ability to time travel while helping his own universe’s Batman save Gotham City. As a child, Barry’s mother was murdered and his father was unjustly imprisoned for the crime. Barry realizes that he could use his time travel abilities to go back to the day of his mother’s death and prevent it from happening. Despite Batman’s warnings that changing the past could have unforeseen consequences, Barry is tempted to try.
However, when Barry goes back in time to alter his family’s past, he inadvertently breaks the world. In the new present caused by Barry’s interference, the evil Kryptonian warlord General Zod stands unopposed in his plan to conquer Earth as there is no Superman, Wonder Woman, or Aquaman to stop him in this altered timeline. There is, however, an older Bruce Wayne, played by Keaton, living as a hermit in Wayne Manor. Barry must convince this Batman to come out of retirement and help him stop Zod. The movie is jam-packed with plot, plot, and more plot, leavened with comic relief from Ezra Miller playing dual roles as both The Flash and the less mature Barry Allen of the alternate reality.
Although the film starts strong, with energy, humor, and recognition of the trauma often present in superhero origin stories, it starts to falter as it becomes entangled in fixing the unintended side effects of Barry’s actions. The movie is overloaded with new characters and plot twists, causing the motivations of the main characters to become lost. Despite this, Keaton’s return as Batman is enjoyable, and Miller does a commendable job of making the two Barrys distinct characters. The charisma of these stars keeps the film running at a good pace. However, the quips and fan service begin to feel like distractions, and the film’s ending, while tying up Barry’s emotional journey, undercuts its own message about dealing with grief. The Flash has its ups and downs but barely gets a recommendation. While some have hailed it as one of the greatest DC Comics movies ever made, it seems to stumble rather than sprint to the finish line.
