“Fear the Night” is a thriller centered around a distressing home invasion during a bachelorette party, and it’s a challenge to discern who the joke is truly on. Set in the hills of California, the movie features Maggie Q as Tess, a disillusioned military veteran who must confront intruders breaking into her family’s farmhouse, where a pre-wedding celebration for her sister Rose is being held. A significant part of the movie displays the fear and frustration surrounding Tess and the other party attendees, as they attempt to evade the imminent threat of assault and potential murder. The film, written and directed by playwright Neal LaBute, known for his tasteless erotic vampire movie “House of Darkness,” often oscillates between intentional tedium and ruthless stinginess towards the audience, actors, and characters.
With “Fear the Night,” LaBute intends to provoke, consistently introducing the imminent threat of sexual violence. While some elements of dramatic irony attempt to portray the clichéd conflict of the movie under a darker light, they fail to significantly complicate the plot. The central event of the movie is the assault on the family farmhouse by a group of misogynistic men, during which Tess strives to maintain her composure and save the day. Meanwhile, her sister Beth, despite being aware of why they are being targeted, fails to clarify the situation and often seems irritatingly ignorant, further increasing the tension. Tess’s portrayal as a wounded warrior suggests that some values are inviolable despite the drama’s moral relativity, and other character clichés are either ridiculed or slightly complicated, contributing to the lack of well-developed characters in the movie.
The persistent threat of sexual violence in the film isn’t necessarily unrealistic, but the lack of imagination makes “Fear the Night” hard to watch, especially due to the superficiality of Tess’s dialogue. The bachelorette’s overly dramatic and hollow provocations, and the attackers’ repeated threats, only serve to underline the blatant genre pandering in the movie. Even the movie’s attempts at achieving post-feminist retribution seem empty, with no distinction between the type of movie LaBute aims to satirize and the one he ends up creating. The film feels like the work of artists who understand the genre in which they are working, but don’t care enough to make it appealing, resulting in a difficult journey for both intrigued and unsuspecting viewers.
