Huesera

MOVIE SHORT REVIEW

ENGLISH REVIEW

For her directorial debut, Michelle Garza Cervera does not play it safe. She presents a chilling examination of the difficulties of pregnancy for a woman who grew up avoiding domestic life. Valeria (Soli√°n) and her husband Ra√ļl (Dosal) receive the outcome they desire. However, Valeria faces a plethora of challenges in the following months: sneering family members, a loss of profession, a husband who fears sex, and a malevolent entity that desires to possess her. Huesera is a slow-burning, subtle horror that is more focused on Valeria’s struggles with a culture that expects her to submit to motherhood than with traditional horror. The cinematography and sound design are remarkable, and the sound literally crackles throughout. As Valeria’s physical and mental condition deteriorates, the movie turns to conventional horror for its conclusion. Natalie Soli√°n’s (in her feature debut) performance, sharp writing, and sequences that are incredibly unsettling make Huesera a triumphant debut. The lack of ‚Äėscares‚Äô and sluggish pace may not be to everyone’s tastes, but Huesera delivers a powerful, engaging, and sometimes bruising experience.
