Two nameless figures roam the dark, sparse landscape, walking towards oblivion in search of a mythical nirvana. The disaster that ended civilization is never explained, but they journey towards the former coast of California, avoiding people and the consequences of chance encounters. The father loves the son but questions the goodness of others, while the son still sees the suffering and wants to help. They sleep in the woods and face illness, hunger, and death at every turn. The writer portrays a harsh, uncaring world where humans struggle to survive and the future is uncertain for the weak.
