The author excels at capturing the themes of loneliness and the desire for companionship. Robert Neville, as the sole survivor on Earth, battles with loneliness and boredom and turns to alcohol for solace. I appreciated the flashbacks to Robert’s family and how the world coped with the outbreak before it worsened. I wish there were more of these scenes. The author also does a fantastic job with the science aspect. The detailed explanation of how the vampires came into being, how the disease rapidly spread, and why they fear garlic, the crucifix, and running water was intriguing. I liked how the protagonist made efforts to understand the weaknesses of the creatures and put his discoveries into practice. The scenes where Robert tries to tame a stray dog were heartwarming. I’m not overstating it, the ending was one of the best I’ve ever read. Read this book just for the conclusion. It’s probably one of the finest and most appropriate endings to a novel I’ve encountered so far.
