I was so thrilled to get an Advanced Reader Copy (ARC) of “The Girl From the Sea” by Molly Knox Ostertag–a middle grade series coming to Netflix. As a coastal, oceanic person living in the Maritimes, selkie stories have always held a special place in my heart. This sapphic story puts a delightful LGBT twist on the traditional tale: Morgan is a gay teen living in Lunenberg, a small port town, and while she is not out of the closet, she is planning her escape. After being rescued from drowning by Keltie, the two start to fall in love, making Morgan’s secret more difficult to hide.
I’m glad that this book centers around a gay teen in a small town in Nova Scotia! Unfortunately, it’s not always the most progressive place when it comes to LGBT issues. Queer people often flee the East Coast in order to fully become themselves or move to the “big city” of Halifax. However, some return home once they are secure in their identity and some leave their homes behind, much like selkies leaving the sea to be with a person they love.
