An entire generation has passed since the iconic movie “Bend it Like Beckham,” and both the Desi diaspora in the UK and the cinema about their lives have evolved significantly. The debut film of writer and director Nida Manzoor, a bold and cheeky action comedy about an arranged marriage, is evidence of this change. Manzoor, creator of the quirky TV comedy “We Are Lady Parts” about a female Muslim punk band, maintains the same style in this movie that examines the state of young womanhood in a declining patriarchal society.
Ria, played by Priya Kansara in a breakthrough performance, is a skinny teenager who dreams of becoming a stunt double. Despite her school advisor and parents dismissing her aspirations, Ria remains determined. Her older sister Lena (Ritu Arya), fresh out of art school, is her only supporter. When a wealthy and handsome young doctor, Salim (Ashay Khanna), and his family show interest in arranging a marriage with Lena, Ria stands firm in not allowing her sister to give up her artistic dreams. Thus, she devises a plan with her schoolmates to sabotage the wedding, drawing inspiration from classic romantic and action films.
“Polite Society” starts with a fast pace but slows down when things become excessive. However, it regains momentum in an exciting finale that includes a grand Indian wedding, a dance, epic showdowns, martial arts movie stunts, and a getaway car in the style of “Thelma & Louise.” The main theme of holding onto one’s dreams may seem somewhat tired in this environment of privileged young people, but it highlights how today’s young women are no longer limited by family or cultural expectations. They are free to dream beyond becoming doctors, perfect wives, or merely emulating Beckham, and they will not hesitate to unleash their fury if someone tries to stop them.

Desde la icónica película “Bend it Like Beckham” ha pasado toda una generación, y tanto la diáspora Desi en el Reino Unido como el cine sobre sus vidas han evolucionado significativamente. La primera película de la escritora y directora Nida Manzoor, una comedia de acción audaz y descarada sobre un matrimonio arreglado, es prueba de este cambio. Manzoor, creadora de la peculiar comedia televisiva “We Are Lady Parts” sobre una banda punk femenina musulmana, mantiene el mismo estilo en esta película que examina el estado de la mujer joven en una sociedad patriarcal en declive.
Ria, interpretada por Priya Kansara en una actuación reveladora, es una adolescente delgada que sueña con ser doble de acción. A pesar de que su consejera escolar y sus padres desestiman sus aspiraciones, Ria sigue decidida. Su hermana mayor Lena (Ritu Arya), recién salida de la escuela de arte, es su única defensora. “Polite Society” comienza con un ritmo acelerado pero se ralentiza cuando las cosas se vuelven excesivas. Sin embargo, recupera el impulso en un emocionante final que incluye una gran boda india, un baile, enfrentamientos épicos, acrobacias de películas de artes marciales y un coche de fuga al estilo de “Thelma & Louise”. El tema principal de aferrarse a los sueños puede resultar algo cansado en este entorno de jóvenes privilegiados, pero destaca cómo las mujeres jóvenes de hoy ya no están limitadas por las expectativas familiares o culturales. Son libres de soñar más allá de convertirse en médicas, esposas perfectas o simplemente imitar a Beckham, y no dudarán en desatar su furia si alguien intenta detenerlas.
