SINOPSIS
A Ernie Cunningham nunca le han gustado las reuniones familiares. Aunque algo tiene que ver el hecho de que hace tres años viera a su hermano, Michael, matar a alguien y lo denunciara a la policía, un ultraje que la familia nunca le ha perdonado. Ahora han decidido reunirse para una ocasión especial: pasarán un fin de semana en un hotel en la montaña para celebrar el reencuentro con Michael. Pero los Cunningham no son una familia que se pase el fin de semana bajo la manta contemplando el paisaje. El día en que llegue Michael encontrarán el cadáver de un hombre en las inmediaciones del hotel. Cuando la policía sea incapaz de resolver el crimen, quedará en manos de Ernie deducir si el culpable es uno de sus familiares… antes de que sea demasiado tarde.

I must confess that, at first, “Everyone in my family has killed someone,” published by Editorial Planeta, seemed like an enigmatic read. I wasn’t sure if I would enjoy it, but as the plot unfolded, it proved to be a fascinating work. The novel centers around the Cunningham family, with Ernest (Ernie) Cunningham as the narrator, and tells the story of a murder that occurred 25 years ago, weaving two narratives throughout the tale. In this mystery, the narrator constantly comments on how the story is constructed, following the “10 rules of the detective novel” published by Ronald Knox in 1929, thus meeting the expectations of the readers.
The plot begins when Michael, Ernie’s brother, arrives at his house with the lifeless body of Alan Holtan in the trunk of his car. They take him to the hills to kill him, and they find a bag of money on the ground. Michael is convicted and sent to prison. Three years later, his aunt Katherine organizes a Cunningham/García family reunion at the luxurious Sky Lodge Mountain Retreat, which everyone must attend. Ernie finds himself ostracized, as he was the one who testified against his brother. The family consists of his aunt Katherine and her husband Andy Millot, his mother Audrey and her husband Marcello García, his stepsister Sofia, a medical professional, his ex-wife Erin, and Michael’s ex-wife Lucy. Everyone arrives at the resort and stays in different chalets, with Ernie’s being the last. The next morning, he wakes up and sees several people and police patrols near his chalet. They find a corpse, which is taken to a shed due to an impending storm. The officer in charge is Daris Crawford. Michael arrives at the resort in a moving truck accompanied by Erin and, upon arrival, is arrested by Officer Crawford and confined to a dry room. Juliette is the owner of the resort, and Sophia has created two bingo cards for her and Ernie in relation to the family reunion.
The narration flows by alternating between the present and the past, allowing readers to discover for themselves the complicated details of the past and the various events in the present. Ernie’s narration facilitates the tracking of both stories by following the rules established by Knox and providing relevant information as the plot unfolds. Two other murders occur, those of Michael and Lucy, which Sophia suspects are the work of the serial killer Black Tongue. The plot intensifies until it reaches an exciting climax with a surprising conclusion. This novel is ideal for those readers who enjoy order and logic in mystery novels.

No estaba seguro de si la disfrutaría, pero conforme se desarrollaba la trama, resultó ser una obra fascinante. La novela se centra en la familia Cunningham, con Ernest (Ernie) Cunningham como narrador, y narra un asesinato ocurrido 25 años atrás, entrelazando dos historias a lo largo del relato. En este misterio, el narrador comenta constantemente cómo está construida la historia, siguiendo las “10 reglas de la novela detectivesca” publicadas por Ronald Knox en 1929, cumpliendo así con las expectativas de los lectores.
La trama se inicia cuando Michael, hermano de Ernie, llega a su casa con el cuerpo sin vida de Alan Holtan en el maletero de su automóvil. Lo llevan a las colinas para asesinarlo, y encuentran una bolsa con dinero en el suelo. Michael es condenado y enviado a prisión. Tres años después, su tía Katherine organiza una reunión familiar Cunningham/García en el lujoso centro turístico Sky Lodge Mountain Retreat, a la que todos deben asistir. Ernie se encuentra marginado, pues fue él quien testificó en contra de su hermano. Todos llegan al resort y se hospedan en distintos chalets, siendo el de Ernie el último. A la mañana siguiente, despierta y observa a varias personas y patrullas policiales cerca de su chalet. Encuentran un cadáver, que es llevado a un cobertizo debido a una inminente tormenta. El oficial a cargo es Daris Crawford. Michael llega al resort en un camión de mudanzas acompañado por Erin y, al llegar, es arrestado por el oficial Crawford y recluido en una habitación seca. Juliette es la propietaria del resort, y Sophia ha creado dos cartones de bingo para ella y Ernie en relación a la reunión familiar.
La narración fluye alternando entre el presente y el pasado, dejando a los lectores descubrir por sí mismos los complicados detalles del pasado y los diversos acontecimientos en el presente. La narración de Ernie facilita el seguimiento de ambas historias al seguir las reglas establecidas por Knox y brindar información relevante a medida que avanza la trama. Se producen otros dos asesinatos, los de Michael y Lucy, que Sophia sospecha son obra del asesino en serie Black Tongue. La trama se intensifica hasta alcanzar un emocionante clímax con un sorprendente desenlace. Esta novela es ideal para aquellos lectores que disfrutan del orden y la lógica en las novelas de misterio.

Humorista y escritor australiano, Benjamin Stevenson escribe principalmente novela negra y thriller. En su faceta como cómico, Benjamin forma parte de The Stevenson Experience, un dúo fundado junto a su hermano.
