There comes a point in our lives when we stop perceiving our parents as perfect figures of adulthood and begin to understand them as fallible individuals, possibly as lost as we are. This complex shift in perspective is explored in the poignant and subtle film “Acidman”, directed by Alex Lehmann. The plot focuses on the relationship between Lloyd (Thomas Haden Church), a hermit living in Oregon, and his estranged daughter, Maggie (Dianna Agron).
After years of separation, Maggie decides to visit Lloyd, who lives in isolation and spends his time trying to communicate with aliens and composing industrial music using everyday objects. Although Maggie arrives with good intentions, she also carries with her a latent concern for her father’s mental health, adding a tone of suspicion to their reunion.
The heart of the film is the relationship between Lloyd and Maggie, a relationship marked by a complicated past and an uncertain future. Despite Lloyd’s peculiarities and mental health issues, the love and respect between father and daughter are undeniable. The question posed is whether Maggie can come to accept her father’s peculiar lifestyle, considering her own issues. Thanks to the outstanding performances by Church and Agron, “Acidman” avoids becoming a moralizing drama in which Maggie has to “fix” her father. Instead, the film transforms into an emotive narrative about how a father and daughter learn to accept their reality without deteriorating their relationship, even if he insists on communicating with extraterrestrials that probably only exist in his imagination.

Llega un punto en nuestras vidas en el que dejamos de percibir a nuestros padres como figuras perfectas de la adultez para entenderlos como individuos falibles, posiblemente tan perdidos como nosotros. Este complejo cambio de perspectiva es explorado en la conmovedora y sutil película “Acidman”, dirigida por Alex Lehmann. La trama se centra en la relación entre Lloyd (Thomas Haden Church), un ermitaño que vive en Oregon, y su hija distanciada, Maggie (Dianna Agron).
Después de años de separación, Maggie decide visitar a Lloyd, quien vive en aislamiento y dedica su tiempo a intentar comunicarse con alienígenas y a la composición de música industrial utilizando objetos cotidianos. Aunque Maggie llega cargada de buenas intenciones, también trae consigo una preocupación latente por la salud mental de su padre, lo que añade un tono de sospecha a su reunión.
