District 9 was an excellent film, but Neill Blomkamp’s follow-up movies, Elysium and Chappie, have not been as well-received. Six years later, Blomkamp is back with the low-budget, pandemic-shot horror Demonic. The movie follows Carly (Pope), who uses state-of-the-art technology to enter the mind of her comatose mother, Angela (Boltt), via VR in order to understand her troubled mental state. Unfortunately, Demonic quickly descends into cliche and contrived horror-action, with a nonsensical villain, Black Ops Priests, that can only be defeated by a magic spear. The movie is filled with daft moments, along with bad dialogue, poor performances, and low-budget visuals. The tension is virtually non-existent, and there are no legitimately scary scenes or visuals. It’s evident that Demonic had potential to be a great movie, but instead ends up being a horror show with nothing to show for it. It’s a shame, as the dysfunctional family idea along with the VR could’ve been used to create something amazing.

District 9 fue una película excelente, pero las películas de seguimiento de Neill Blomkamp, Elysium y Chappie, no han sido tan bien recibidas. Seis años después, Blomkamp está de vuelta con Demonic, el horror pandémico y de bajo presupuesto. La película sigue a Carly (Pope), que utiliza tecnología de última generación para entrar en la mente de su madre en coma, Angela (Boltt), a través de la realidad virtual para comprender su estado mental problemático. Desafortunadamente, Demonic desciende rápidamente a un cliché y una acción de terror artificial, con un villano sin sentido, Black Ops Priests, que solo puede ser derrotado por una lanza mágica. La película está llena de momentos tontos, junto con malos diálogos, malas actuaciones y efectos visuales de bajo presupuesto. La tensión es prácticamente inexistente, y no hay escenas o imágenes legítimamente aterradoras. Es evidente que Demonic tenía potencial para ser una gran película, pero en cambio termina siendo un espectáculo de terror sin nada que mostrar. Es una pena, ya que la idea de la familia disfuncional junto con la realidad virtual podrían haberse utilizado para crear algo increíble.
