Juan Gómez-Jurado
Despite not normally being interested in thrillers, I stumbled upon Juan Gómez-Jurado’s ‘Reina Roja’ by chance. I found it so entertaining that I finished the second book, ‘Loba Negra’, just over two weeks after its release. I really like the main characters, the gay Basque detective and the superhuman intelligence agent. The author handles the pacing, the secondary characters and the atmosphere masterfully, and manages to include some humorous touches without them grating. I like how he introduces elements of national popular culture to make the story more familiar. The case in this second novel hits close to home for me, since it shows that something interesting can happen outside of Madrid and Barcelona. Although I sometimes see too much adherence to plot twists, the truth is that the author is capable of creating cliffhangers that keep the intrigue without feeling cheated. Overall, I’m delighted with this approach to the genre and highly recommend both books. Long live Antonina Scott and Jon Gutiérrez!
A pesar de que normalmente no me interesan los thrillers, llegué a ‘Reina Roja’ de Juan Gómez-Jurado de casualidad. Me encontré tan entretenido que terminé el segundo tomo, ‘Loba Negra’, poco más de dos semanas después de su lanzamiento. Me gustan mucho los personajes principales, el comisario vasco gay y la agente especial de inteligencia sobrehumana. El autor maneja el ritmo, los personajes secundarios y la ambientación con maestría, y consigue incluir algunos toques de humor sin que chirríen. Me gusta cómo introduce elementos de la cultura popular nacional para hacer la historia más cercana. El caso que trata en esta segunda novela me pilla muy de cerca, ya que muestra que algo interesante puede pasar fuera de Madrid y Barcelona. Aunque a veces veo demasiado apego a los giros de argumento, lo cierto es que el autor es capaz de crear cliffhangers que mantienen la intriga sin sentirse estafado. En general, estoy encantado con este acercamiento al género y recomiendo mucho los dos libros. ¡Que vivan Antonina Scott y Jon Gutiérrez!
