Stephen King
The Institute is not considered one of Stephen King’s best works by many, but I found it to be highly entertaining. The story takes a familiar plot, similar to those in many young adult novels, and adds in King’s characteristic detailed characterization, lengthy storytelling, and potential for conspiracy theories. The story follows children with special abilities who are captured and subjected to cruel experiments by a secret government organization. The novel’s structure, alternating between characters Tim Jamieson and Luke Ellis, adds to the story’s intrigue and keeps the reader guessing how their paths will intersect. Despite its dark and unfair themes, the story is compelling and sends a hopeful message that even children have the power to stand up against injustice. Overall, a worthwhile read.
