In Infernal Devices, the third book in Philip Reeve’s Mortal Engines quartet, sixteen years have passed since the end of the previous book Predator’s Gold. Anchorage has become a static city and Hester and Tom, the two main characters from the first two books, have married and had a daughter, Wren. When the story begins, Wren has grown into a teenager and makes a very poor first impression. She has been influenced by her parents and is reckless, making a poorly thought-out decision to steal an artifact from the Anchorage museum and join the Lost Boys. Tom is mostly unchanged, but Hester has grown even harder, likely due to certain knowledge that even her husband and daughter find her embarassingly ugly.
The action eventually settles at Brighton, where Pennyroyal has become mayor. There are some humorous moments throughout the story, including a hilarious airship called Damn You, Gravity. The author sets up the story nicely for the next book while still providing enough content to be satisfying on its own. The story ends with a cliffhanger, leaving the reader anxious to find out what happens next. Overall, Infernal Devices is an exciting and enjoyable continuation of the Mortal Engines quartet. It captures the reader’s attention and leaves them wanting more. With its blend of action, humor and romance, this is a book that will keep readers engaged and entertained.
