Una llanura tenebrosa has a lot of complex plotlines that make it difficult to follow in audiobook form. There are a lot of painful misunderstandings, and the characters make a lot of bad choices that have disastrous consequences. Hester, Shrike, Theo, and Dr. Zero are rescued from enslavement by the Green Storm, but Tom and Wren do not return to Anchorage. Professor Pennyroyal is finally discredited and it is quite satisfying. Wren and Tom find hope in London and Hester and Shrike continue to move about the world. It is eventually revealed that Anna Fang, the re-resurrected stalker, is out to eradicate all human life in order to make the earth green again. The chapters alternate between Fishcake and Anna Fang’s plans, and in the end, hearts are mended and the conflict reaches its conclusion.
This book is not a cheerful story of the future of humanity, and it may be best to read it in print or in large chunks on an audiobook to keep track of the characters and their motivations. The takeaway from this book is that hurt only leads to more hurt in increasing amounts. I would recommend this book to those interested in a dark tale of consequences.
