The Australian film scene is known to deliver strong productions that often go unnoticed, and their horror films have been particularly noteworthy in the past. With Surrogate, director David Willing’s debut feature, he delves into the supernatural as it follows Natalie (Morassi), a single mother and nurse whose mysterious illness results in immediate symptoms of pregnancy. This culminates in an apparent birth, though the baby is nowhere to be found. As Natalie desperately tries to keep her family and herself from unraveling, she must also fend off the ire of doctors and child services. While Surrogate isn’t wholly original, it is an effective and sometimes excellent low-budget horror film that blends supernatural elements with mystery and thriller elements, anchored by Kestie Morassi’s strong lead performance. Mark Buys’ score complements the competent production, and there are some truly excellent sequences, such as a seance that is perfectly framed and executed. The conclusion is bleak and striking, propping the movie up in a satisfying way. Although some of the subplots and characters don’t always work, Surrogate is an assured debut feature that tries to blend the old and new, often succeeding in doing so.

Se sabe que la escena cinematográfica australiana ofrece producciones sólidas que a menudo pasan desapercibidas, y sus películas de terror han sido particularmente notables en el pasado. Con Surrogate, el primer largometraje del director David Willing, se adentra en lo sobrenatural a medida que sigue a Natalie (Morassi), una madre soltera y enfermera cuya misteriosa enfermedad provoca síntomas inmediatos de embarazo. Esto culmina en un nacimiento aparente, aunque el bebé no se encuentra por ningún lado. Mientras Natalie trata desesperadamente de evitar que su familia y ella misma se desmoronen, también debe defenderse de la ira de los médicos y los servicios infantiles.
