After spending 55 pages with the characters of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, I’m convinced that Robert Louis Stevenson chose the names specifically so he could include the iconic line: “If he shall be Mr. Hyde, I shall be Mr. Seek!” This novella is not only a classic for its creepy and captivating premise of losing sanity and humanity, but it also hints at the power of drug-induced creativity and the subversive qualities of Victorian horror. I’m fascinated by how this genre allowed queer people, women, and mentally ill people to express their frustrations with Victorian society in a way that appealed to a wide audience and I plan to explore this further in my term paper.
